AstraRoll is a China polyurethane roller manufacturer & factory, supplying high wear-resistant PU coated rollers. We accept OEM & ODM with custom dimensions, hardness and surface finishes for printing, laminating, conveying, textile, paper, lithium foil, packaging and web converting machinery.

Company Profile

AstraRoll is a professional polyurethane roller manufacturer based in China, specializing in the design, precision machining, rubber and polyurethane covering, and advanced surface finishing of industrial rollers for the global converting industry. For more than a decade, AstraRoll has focused its production capability on high-performance industrial rollers, with polyurethane (PU) coated rollers as one of our flagship product lines. Widely recognized as PU rollers or urethane rollers, these components are essential for printing, coating, laminating, conveying, paper making, packaging and many other web processing applications.

AstraRoll supplies hundreds of rollers annually to clients across Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. We have built a solid reputation for stable dimensional quality, durable surface performance and responsive technical service.

What Is a Polyurethane Roller?

A polyurethane roller is an industrial roller whose outer working surface is covered with a layer of cast polyurethane elastomer. This PU covering is bonded to a steel, stainless steel or aluminum core, providing an elastic, wear-resistant, and chemical-resistant contact surface for the material being processed.

Polyurethane is chosen over conventional rubber because it offers an outstanding combination of high load capacity, excellent abrasion resistance, good tear strength and resistance to oils, solvents and many chemicals. These properties make PU rollers ideal for demanding production environments where rubber rollers wear out too quickly or where precise surface hardness and rebound characteristics are required.

The term “polyurethane roller” covers a broad family: PU drive rollers, PU coating rollers, PU conveyor rollers, PU printing rollers and PU pinch rollers. Depending on the application, the PU covering can be cast in different hardness grades, ranging from soft elastomers for gripping to harder grades for precision metering and coating.

Why Polyurethane Instead of Rubber?

Many buyers ask why they should choose a polyurethane roller over a traditional rubber roller. The answer lies in performance under load and wear.

1. Superior Abrasion Resistance

Polyurethane elastomer typically provides several times longer service life than natural or synthetic rubber under the same abrasive conditions, especially when handling paper, film, fabric, mineral particles or abrasive coatings.

2. Higher Load Capacity

PU rollers can withstand higher nip pressures and heavier loading without permanent deformation, making them suitable for heavy-duty conveying and high-pressure coating applications.

3. Better Tear and Cut Resistance

Polyurethane offers excellent tear strength, resisting cuts, nicks and edge damage that would quickly destroy a rubber cover.

4. Chemical and Oil Resistance

PU formulations resist oils, greases, many solvents and weak acids, extending roller life in industrial environments where rubber degrades.

5. Precise Hardness and Rebound Control

Polyurethane can be formulated to exact Shore hardness from 20 Shore A to 75 Shore D, allowing engineers to select the ideal surface for gripping, metering, coating or pressure application.

6. Excellent Rebound and Low Compression Set

PU rollers return quickly to original shape after load removal, maintaining consistent performance and reducing downtime for roller replacement.

Product Types

AstraRoll manufactures a wide range of polyurethane rollers to match different machinery and working conditions.

1. PU Drive Rollers

Used to pull or advance a web, sheet, belt or product through a machine. The high-friction PU surface prevents slippage while providing excellent wear life.

2. PU Coating & Metering Rollers

Used in coating, gluing, laminating and metering systems where a precise, uniform layer is applied to a substrate. Hardness and surface finish are tailored to achieve exact coating weight.

3. PU Conveyor & Handling Rollers

Designed for conveying lines, packaging equipment and material handling systems, providing durable, quiet and slip-resistant support for transported products.

4. PU Printing Rollers

Used in flexographic, gravure and offset printing for ink transfer and impression. Surface precision is critical to print quality.

5. PU Pinch / Nip Rollers

Used in pairs to grip and pull webs under controlled pressure, common in bag-making, laminating and converting machines.

6. Custom-Shaped PU Rollers

Special profiles, grooves, flanges and non-round shapes can be produced to meet unique machine designs.

Core & Surface Material Options

AstraRoll offers several core materials and PU formulations to satisfy different industrial requirements.

Core / Substrate Materials

  • Carbon steel cores: standard economical choice for most applications.
  • Stainless steel SS304 / SS316 cores: corrosion resistance for wet, chemical and food-contact environments.
  • Aluminum cores: lightweight construction for low-inertia and high-speed applications.

PU Surface Hardness Range

  • Soft grade: 20–55 Shore A, for gripping, soft-contact and gentle handling.
  • Medium grade: 55–90 Shore A, the most common range for drive, conveyor and coating rollers.
  • Hard grade: 90 Shore A – 75 Shore D, for precision metering, high-pressure and abrasive conditions.

Surface Finish Options

  • Smooth polished surface for precision coating and printing.
  • Ground surface with controlled roughness for specific gripping requirements.
  • Grooved or fluted surface for air release and chip evacuation.
  • Conductive or anti-static PU for electronics and packaging industries.

Technical Specifications

All AstraRoll polyurethane rollers are manufactured to order according to client drawings and application parameters. Our standard production range includes roller diameters from 30 mm to 500 mm, working widths up to 6,000 mm, and overall lengths up to 6,500 mm. PU covering thickness ranges from 5 mm to 40 mm depending on application.

Typical hardness tolerance is ±2 Shore A, and critical diameter tolerance is held within ±0.05 mm. AstraRoll supplies both static and dynamic balancing, and can provide official balance test reports complying with ISO 1940 G2.5 or higher. Operating temperature range depends on PU formulation but is generally from -20°C to +80°C continuous, with special formulations available for higher temperatures.

Manufacturing Process & Quality Control

AstraRoll follows a complete, traceable production process to guarantee consistent roller quality.

1. Design & Drawing Review

Our engineers confirm core material, PU hardness, covering thickness, surface finish and mounting structure based on your machine and application requirements.

2. Core Machining

Steel or stainless cores are precision turned on CNC lathes to achieve accurate dimensions and surface preparation for strong PU bonding.

3. PU Casting & Curing

Polyurethane is mixed, cast and cured onto the core under controlled conditions to ensure uniform density, correct hardness and strong adhesion without delamination.

4. Grinding & Finishing

The cured PU surface is cylindrical or centerless ground to final diameter, hardness verification and required surface roughness.

5. Balancing

Rollers are dynamically balanced on precision equipment, with reports available for high-speed applications.

6. Inspection & Packaging

Dimensional, hardness and surface checks are recorded, then rollers are protected and packed in heavy-duty wooden crates for export.

AstraRoll’s production system is ISO 9001 certified. Raw materials are traceable through batch numbers, and material certificates are available on request.
