Cathode Roller Manufacturer
Every electrolytic copper foil production line relies on one mission-critical core component: the cathode roller. It is the large precision titanium drum where copper ions deposit uniformly to form ultra-thin copper foil, then peel continuously at stable line speed for lithium-ion batteries, CCL and PCB substrates. Seemingly simple in rotary form, it demands extreme precision in manufacturing: a cathode roller must maintain ultra-low surface roughness, strict cylindricity and concentricity; it must run smoothly at high rotation speed within corrosive electrolyte environments; and it must sustain stable electrodeposition for long continuous production cycles. That is why professional copper foil manufacturers do not source cathode rollers from generic machinery vendors — they partner with a cathode roller factory that fully controls every production stage: titanium shell fabrication, core assembly, precision grinding, surface finishing, dynamic balancing and full performance testing. This article explains what a cathode roller is, how a specialized factory builds it, and why AstraRoll's cathode roller factory has become a trusted supplier for electrolytic copper foil plants worldwide.
What Is a Cathode Roller?A cathode roller is a large rotating cylindrical drum, mainly constructed from high-purity titanium shell with steel core structure, mounted on heavy-duty shaft assembly, installed inside electrolytic cells as the negative electrode for copper electrodeposition. Copper ions precipitate on its polished outer surface to form continuous copper foil, which is stripped off for downstream battery or electronic material processing. The final copper foil quality is directly governed by four core parameters strictly controlled by the factory:
- Titanium shell material – high-purity titanium with excellent corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid electrolyte, stable conductivity and long service life.
- Surface roughness & topography – controlled Ra value and uniform surface texture, determining copper foil grain structure, peel strength and surface quality.
- Dimensional precision – cylindricity, roundness and straightness, to guarantee consistent foil thickness across the full working width.
- Concentricity & dynamic balance – minimal vibration during high-speed rotation, avoiding foil thickness fluctuation and surface defects.
A professional cathode roller factory delivers customized drums for different copper foil grades, as each production line targets distinct foil specifications:
- Cathode roller for lithium battery copper foil – ultra-fine polished surface, strict roughness control, for 4.5μm ~ 12μm ultra-thin battery copper foil.
- Cathode roller for PCB / CCL copper foil – optimized surface texture for standard and high-temperature resistant circuit board copper foil.
- Reconditioned cathode roller service – precision re-grinding, surface repair and refurbishment for used cathode rollers to restore original surface performance.
- Large-width custom cathode roller – customized shell width and diameter for high-capacity continuous copper foil production lines.
Each cathode roller is built to order: outer diameter, working width, shaft structure, conductive assembly, surface roughness and end connection interfaces are all engineered according to customer’s electrolytic machine parameters.
Inside the AstraRoll Cathode Roller FactoryAstraRoll's cathode roller workshop is a dedicated precision manufacturing plant, not a general metal workshop handling cathode rollers as side jobs. Production proceeds in tightly controlled sequential stages:
1.Core & shaft machiningThe heavy load steel core and rotary shaft are cut, turned and ground on large CNC lathes to customer specified journal, keyway, conductive connector and end fitting dimensions. Straightness and journal tolerance are held to ultra-precision standards; any runout or misalignment will trigger vibration, thickness variation and foil surface defects during electrolysis.
2.Titanium shell forming & assembly
High-purity titanium plate undergoes rolling, welding, post-weld stress relief and machining to form rolled & welded cylindrical shell. The titanium shell is assembled onto steel core with controlled preload, eliminating residual stress which would deform the roller under thermal and chemical operating conditions. Weld inspection and stress relief treatment are mandatory to avoid distortion in electrolyte environment.
3.Precision grinding & surface finishing
Multi-stage coarse and fine grinding, followed by ultra-precision polishing to reach required surface roughness. This process defines the topography that controls copper deposition behavior and foil peel performance. Surface defects, scratches and waviness are eliminated layer by layer.
4.Dynamic balancing & run test
Every finished cathode roller undergoes high-speed dynamic balancing and rotary runout inspection, checking concentricity, vibration amplitude and rotary stability. Full test reports are delivered together with the roller.
