Electromagnetic Roller Manufacturer

AstraRoll is an electromagnetic roller manufacturer in China producing precision electromagnetic rollers for industrial machinery and processing equipment. Custom specifications & surface treatment, OEM/ODM, worldwide delivery.

Electromagnetic Roller Factory: Where Magnetic Force Meets Precision Engineering

Every magnetic separation line, automated parts-conveying system, and tension-control station relies on one underrated critical component: the electromagnetic roller. This precision-manufactured cylinder generates a controllable magnetic field to attract, hold, convey or release ferrous materials. Typical applications include separating steel scrap from recycling streams, securing steel sheets during processing, applying braking tension to moving webs, and lifting or transferring metal workpieces across production lines.

Though simple in principle, electromagnetic rollers demand strict manufacturing standards. The roller surface must deliver a stable, uniform magnetic field; the shaft must maintain precise concentricity at operating speeds. It also needs reliable heat dissipation and wear resistance for thousands of hours of continuous operation. Professional buyers avoid generic catalogue products and partner with specialized roller factories that manage the full production workflow: magnetic core & pole design, coil winding, shaft machining, dynamic balancing and magnetic field testing.

AstraRoll also manufactures high-precision induction heating rollers (also called electromagnetic heating rollers). Unlike magnetic electromagnetic rollers that generate magnetic attraction force, induction heating rollers operate on electromagnetic induction, converting electrical energy into thermal energy inside the roller body. No steam or thermal oil circulation is required. These rollers deliver uniform, stable and controllable surface temperature for film lamination, BOPP film, photovoltaic film, lithium battery diaphragm production, paper calendering, coating, non-woven hot rolling and composite hot pressing.

This article explains electromagnetic rollers, our factory manufacturing process, and why AstraRoll, a trusted Chinese roller manufacturer, is the preferred supplier for global magnetic conveying, magnetic separation and thermal web processing lines.

What Is an Electromagnetic Roller?

An electromagnetic roller is a rotating cylinder built around an internal electromagnet. Laminated magnetic cores are wound with copper or aluminium coils and assembled onto a shaft, powered by DC supply. When current passes through the windings, a magnetic field forms on the roller surface to attract ferromagnetic materials including steel, iron, nickel, cobalt and related alloys. Once power is cut or polarity reversed, the magnetic field weakens, releasing ferrous materials.

The roller functions as a controllable magnetic switch on a rotating surface. This controllability is the key advantage over permanent magnetic rollers. Operators can adjust magnetic strength, switch the magnetic function on/off and reverse polarity — features unavailable with permanent magnets. Unlike permanent magnetic rollers, AstraRoll electromagnetic rollers support real-time adjustment of magnetic attraction force for processes requiring controlled material holding and release.

Induction Heating Roller (Electromagnetic Heating Roller)

Our induction heating roller series adopts electromagnetic induction heating powered by AC medium-frequency power supply:

  • Precise surface temperature control with ±1℃ tolerance, uniform heating across the full working width
  • Fast heating rate and low thermal inertia, more energy-efficient than traditional thermal oil rollers and steam rollers
  • Closed-loop temperature monitoring; adjustable temperature range from ambient up to 300℃. Higher temperature versions are available upon request with upgraded roller material and cooling design
  • Seamless roller surface, anti-stick and wear-resistant; hard chrome plating optional
  • Custom OD, working length, shaft structure and installation dimensions according to customer machine specifications

The real-world performance of all rollers depends on tightly controlled engineering parameters:

  • Magnetic core material and design — laminated silicon/electrical steel to concentrate magnetic flux, reduce eddy current loss and prevent overheating.
  • Winding specification — copper or aluminium conductors, winding turns, insulation class (Class F / Class H optional) and rated current, jointly defining magnetomotive force and surface magnetic strength.
  • Pole geometry and face pattern — pole layout determines magnetic uniformity, holding force distribution and material release performance at the separation edge.
  • Surface material and treatment — wear-resistant stainless steel or engineered shells to protect coils, resist abrasive materials and avoid magnetic distortion.
  • Concentricity, dynamic balancing & thermal management — rotational accuracy, vibration level and heat dissipation determine service life, reliability and operational consistency.

These parameters must be engineered as an integrated system to achieve rated performance. At AstraRoll, our R&D and engineering team treat every electromagnetic roller and induction heating roller as a complete electro-mechanical assembly instead of separate parts, ensuring stable long-term operation under continuous heavy loads.

The Main Types of Electromagnetic Rollers & Induction Heating Rollers

AstraRoll, a professional China roller factory, supplies the full portfolio of electromagnetic rollers and induction heating rollers. Different working conditions require custom magnetic/thermal circuits and mechanical structures:

  • Magnetic separator / head-pulley rollers — installed as the head pulley of belt conveyors or separation decks. Strong magnetic fields extract ferrous contaminants from non-material streams (aggregates, recycled plastics, glass cullet, minerals, food raw materials), separating metal from non-metal materials by different trajectories.
  • Magnetic conveying rollers — attract and transport ferrous workpieces, steel sheets, cans and blanks without mechanical clamps. Multiple rollers work in series for indexing, positioning and accumulation.
  • Electromagnetic tension and brake rollers — widely used in web handling, printing, slitting and rewinding. Adjustable braking torque maintains stable tension for film, paper and aluminium foil. Magnetic field strength directly corresponds to braking torque.
  • Magnetic sheet/lifter rollers — short high-flux rollers. Energize to pick and hold steel sheets and laminations; de-energize to release workpieces, commonly used in stacking, de-stacking and blank feeding stations.
  • Demagnetizing / degaussing rollers — remove residual magnetism from workpieces processed by magnetic equipment, preventing fine metal powder adhesion and interference with downstream operations.
  • Induction heating rollers (electromagnetic heating rollers) — thermal processing rollers for film lamination, BOPP film, photovoltaic film, lithium battery diaphragm, paper calendering, coating machines, adhesive tape, non-woven hot rolling, plastic thermoforming, textile heat setting and composite hot pressing.
  • Custom engineered rollers — tailor-made to customer specifications, including water-cooled / forced-air-cooled electromagnetic rollers, special shells for corrosive or abrasive environments, multi-zone magnetic rollers and custom-temperature induction heating rollers.

All roller types are custom built: OD, working length, shaft size, pole arrangement / heating zone layout, magnetic strength or target temperature, supply voltage and mounting dimensions are customized to match machine requirements. All custom rollers from AstraRoll undergo strict simulation and prototype testing before mass production.

Inside the AstraRoll Roller Factory

AstraRoll’s roller workshop is a dedicated production line rather than a general machining shop producing rollers as side orders. Magnetic and heating rollers have unique failure modes; electrical faults, overheating, magnetic defects and uneven temperature must be eliminated at the design phase.

Magnetic Core & Pole Assembly

Magnetic cores are made of stamped and stacked electrical steel laminations pressed to precise pole geometry and density. Laminations reduce eddy current loss and core overheating. Pole tips are precision machined and aligned to ensure uniform magnetic distribution across the full width. Dimensional inspection and magnetic testing are performed at this stage; misalignment will create hot spots or weak magnetic zones and is rejected before next processes. For induction heating rollers, we design dedicated induction coil layout and thermal conduction structures to guarantee consistent roller surface temperature.

Winding and Insulation

Copper or aluminium coils are wound to specified wire gauge and turns, with insulation class selected according to continuous operating current and ambient temperature. Windings are varnish-dipped or resin-impregnated and cured to resist vibration, moisture and contamination. Insulation resistance testing is mandatory before acceptance; shorted turns will burn the roller during operation. All winding procedures follow standardized insulation processes to extend roller service life.

Shaft and Housing Machining

High-strength steel shafts are selected based on roller length and load capacity, precision turned and ground on CNC lathes to meet customer requirements for journals, keyways and end connections. Shells and end caps are machined to accommodate magnetic cores / induction coils and protect internal windings. Straightness and journal tolerances are tightly controlled. Out-of-spec rollers will cause vibration, premature bearing wear, uneven gaps or inconsistent temperature distribution.

Shell Fitting and Sealing

Precision machined shells (stainless steel for corrosion and wear resistance; composite materials for special magnetic, weight or thermal requirements) are assembled over internal components with sealing protection against dust, moisture and process chemicals. Sealing and surface finishes are customized for different working environments: washdown applications, abrasive media, mineral dust and food-contact requirements. Induction heating rollers adopt seamless shells, with optional hard chrome plating for anti-stick and wear resistance.

Assembly and Dynamic Balancing

Magnetic cores, shafts, shells and wiring components are assembled into finished rollers. Brush or slip-ring power feed units are fitted and aligned. Every finished roller from AstraRoll undergoes dynamic balancing (ISO 1940 standard) and run-in testing at operating speed to check concentricity, vibration and rotational stability.

Performance Testing

  • Electromagnetic rollers: Energized test with full-width surface magnetic scanning to verify magnetic strength and uniformity. Supply voltage, current draw, insulation resistance and temperature rise are recorded.
  • Induction heating rollers: Full-width temperature uniformity test, closed-loop temperature control test and thermal cycle aging test. Test reports are supplied with every shipment.
Materials and Quality Control

Roller materials are selected to meet three core requirements: electrical conductivity, mechanical load bearing and environment resistance.

  • Induction heating coil: High-temperature resistant conductors and insulation materials for stable thermal output.
  • Windings: Copper or aluminium conductors with matched insulation class, varnish or resin impregnated for mechanical and environmental protection.
  • Shafts and housings: High-strength steel shafts; stainless steel shells for corrosion, washdown and food-grade applications; engineered shells for special magnetic or thermal demands.
  • Power feed assembly: Slip rings or brushes selected for target voltage and duty cycle to deliver stable long-lasting power supply.
  • Seals and bearings: Environmentally specified. IP-rated sealing for dusty / washdown conditions; heavy-duty bearings for high radial loads.

QC Workflow: Incoming material inspection, core / coil inspection, winding insulation resistance test, in-process dimensional check, shell sealing test, dynamic balancing, final energized performance test (magnetic test for electromagnetic rollers / temperature uniformity test for heating rollers). Inspection records archived for every batch.
