Product Overview:

In high-volume printing and converting operations, operators must frequently load and unload master rolls of paper, film, or foil. Utilizing traditional solid steel expanding shafts is an ergonomic nightmare, often requiring mechanical hoists and causing severe operator fatigue or injury due to their massive weight. The AstraRoll Lightweight Aluminum Air Shaft provides the ultimate balance of lifting safety and industrial gripping power. Manufactured from precision-extruded, high-tensile aluminum alloy, these pneumatic shafts are up to 50% lighter than their steel counterparts. When inflated via a standard compressed air nozzle, the internal heavy-duty polyurethane bladder instantly forces the external lugs or leaves outward, locking the cardboard or plastic core in a slip-free, perfectly concentric grip. Deflating the shaft allows the master roll to slide off effortlessly, drastically reducing roll-change downtimes and maximizing press productivity.

The AstraRoll Technical Advantage

We engineer our pneumatic shafts to eliminate air leaks, maximize torque, and protect your machine operators:

Aerospace-Grade Aluminum Extrusion: We utilize optimized multi-chamber aluminum extrusions that provide an exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio. This drastically reduces the physical burden on your operators while easily supporting standard master roll weights without sagging.

Hybrid Steel-Journal Architecture: While the main body is lightweight aluminum, we CNC-machine the end journals (the parts that rest in your machine's safety chucks) from high-tensile forged steel. This ensures the shaft ends will not snap or wear down under heavy rotational torque.

Leak-Proof Polyurethane Bladders: The most common failure of an air shaft is a ruptured internal bladder. We utilize premium, ultra-thick PU bladders combined with proprietary vulcanized sealing techniques, ensuring the shaft holds air pressure reliably over millions of inflation cycles.

Perfect Dynamic Concentricity: An unbalanced shaft will cause web-tension fluctuations and vibration at high speeds. Our aluminum bodies are precision-cylindrical ground, ensuring that when the lugs expand, the roll is held in perfect, dead-center alignment.

Key Specifications

Please note: We manufacture the journal ends entirely to your OEM machine drawings.

Standard Outer Diameters (O.D.): 1", 1.5", 2", 3", 4", 6", 8" (or metric equivalents like 76mm, 152mm).
Face Length: Custom manufactured from 200mm up to 4,000mm+.
Working Air Pressure: 0.6 MPa (6 Bar / ~87 PSI).
Lug/Leaf Expansion Height: ~6mm to 8mm expansion beyond the resting diameter.
Material Combination: Hard-Anodized Aluminum Body + Carbon Steel End Journals.

Why Choose AstraRoll?

1. Drop-In OEM Replacement

You do not need to alter your machine's safety chucks or drive motors. Simply provide us with a drawing (or just a few basic measurements) of your current shaft's end journals. AstraRoll will custom-machine the steel ends to perfectly drop into your existing equipment, providing a seamless upgrade.

2. Easy Maintenance & Modular Design

Many cheap air shafts are permanently glued or welded shut, meaning a punctured bladder ruins the entire shaft. AstraRoll air shafts feature a modular, bolted end-cap design. If a bladder ever fails after years of use, your maintenance team can easily unbolt the end cap, slide out the old bladder, and install a replacement in under 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Should I choose a "Lug / Key Type" or a "Leaf Type" air shaft?
A: Choose a Lug/Key Type if you are running standard cardboard or thick plastic cores. The individual metal or rubber keys bite aggressively into the core, handling very high torque. Choose a Leaf Type (which has wide, continuous aluminum plates that expand) if you are running thin-walled cores, delicate materials, or coreless winding, as the wide plates apply even pressure and prevent the core from distorting or crushing.

Q: Will an aluminum air shaft bend if I put a heavy roll of paper on it?
A: For standard packaging films, labels, and medium-weight paper rolls, aluminum is perfect and will not bend. However, for extreme loads (e.g., massive 2-ton jumbo rolls of kraft paper in a steel mill), we will recommend upgrading the main body to carbon steel to prevent deflection. Our engineers will calculate the required material based on your roll weight and web width.

Q: Can you manufacture air shafts for 6-inch cores?
A: Yes. 3-inch (76mm) and 6-inch (152mm) are the global industry standards. We manufacture both daily, along with custom sizes ranging up to 12 inches for specialized corrugated board or tissue applications.
